Chiikawa Phone Smart: 70 apps in your pocket

The headline launch this weekend is the Chiikawa Phone Smart. It is a child-friendly toy smartphone designed to look and feel like a real phone, with a bright pastel case and a screen full of Chiikawa apps. The official announcement says it includes 70 apps in total, so there is plenty to explore, from mini games to everyday-style tools reimagined in the gentle, slightly chaotic style of the series.

The clever part is the kirarin drops. These are small, sweet-shaped character pieces that you scan with the phone. Each one unlocks shop play, so you can pretend to run a little store with Chiikawa, Hachiware, Usagi and friends. It is a lovely idea for younger fans, and the drops themselves are cute enough that collectors may want them for display too. The phone is on sale from today at toy shops and online stores throughout Japan.

The Special Set arrives at Chiikawa Land

Alongside the standard version, there is a Chiikawa Phone Smart Special Set. Chiikawa Land stores, including the Osaka Umeda branch, have announced that both the regular phone and the Special Set arrived in store today. The boxes show the phone together with extra accessories and drops, which makes the Special Set the one to look out for if you want the fullest play experience. As with most Chiikawa launches, early stock at the official shops tends to move quickly over the first weekend.

Anime Chiikawa onigiri case and bottle cover

For something more practical, Chiikawa Land stores in Yokohama and Osaka Umeda have started stocking two new anime Chiikawa goods. The insulated onigiri case holds two rice balls and has a rounded triangle shape, so it fits snugly in a bag for school, work or a day out. The PET bottle cover is a soft drawstring sleeve that keeps a drink cool and stops condensation soaking your bag. Both come in pastel blue and pink designs covered in small anime-style Chiikawa artwork, and they look like the sort of lunch accessories that make a packed lunch feel a little more fun.

Combinaisons return with renewed faces

Winter loungewear fans will be pleased to see the Chiikawa combinaisons back on sale. These are cosy all-in-one hooded suits made from warm, soft fabric, and the new versions feature renewed character faces on the hood. There are KIDS and Ladies sizes, each available as Chiikawa, Hachiware or Usagi, and they have been rolling out through Chiikawa Market and the SAZAC online shop since 23 October. If you liked the earlier combinaisons, the refreshed faces are a little rounder and softer.

Chiikawa × Sanrio kiramekko restock

The Chiikawa × Sanrio Characters kiramekko mascots have also been restocked at Chiikawa Land Ikebukuro Parco. The restock includes Chiikawa × My Melody, Usagi × Pompompurin, Momonga × Kuromi and Kurimanju × Hangyodon, each showing the Chiikawa character dressed as their Sanrio partner. These sold out quickly the first time round, so this is good news for anyone who missed them.

Last call for the Shisa-darake kuji

Finally, a reminder that the online Shisa-darake kuji is in its final days. The A prize is a chunky Shisa plush enjoying a meal and the B prize is a hard-working Shisa plush dashing along with a bowl of noodles. The draw closes at 23:59 Japan time on Tuesday 3 November, which is 14:59 UK time, or earlier if it sells out.
